Unsealed ducts in exterior walls

Unsealed ducts in bonus rooms over unconditioned garages

HVAC Systems :

No mechanical ventilation systems

Electrical resistance heat covering more floor area than a master bathroom

Insulation & Air Barriers :

An air barrier that is not continuously sealed

Insulation R-values that are below energy code minimums

If you checked any of these, this particular house design most likely will not pass. If you didn’t check any so far… keep answering questions… because your future tax credit prospects look promising. Of course EPI can’t guarantee that any specific houses built in Minnesota will qualify for a tax credit, BUT we’ve never seen a house that didn’t qualify if all the boxes were checked in step 2.

Step 2:
Do you use any of the following building practices or products in this design?
Check all that apply:

Heating and Cooling Ducts:

No ducts in exterior walls

OR ducts in exterior walls are sealed with mastic or UL 181 tape
AND insulated with at least R7.5 and sealed to the duct

No ducts in bonus rooms

OR Ducts in bonus room over unconditioned garage are sealed with mastic
or UL 181 tape AND insulated with at least R 7.5 with rigid or spray foam

HVAC Systems :

At least 90% AFUE efficient furnace (or equivalent boiler)
with at least R-38 attic insulation

OR Ground source geothermal heatpump

OR in-floor heat with an efficient boiler

Central air conditioning system meets 13 SEER or better

Mechanical ventilation system (air to air exchanger or continuously exhausting fan)

Insulation & Air Barriers :

At least R-38 attic insulation with energy heeled truss

All insulation levels meet at least the minimum R-values required by code and installed by a conscientious insulation sub-contractor

At least R-5 exterior foundation insulation

Continuously sealed air barrier with: fiberglass and sealed poly; open or closed cell spray foam; sealed rigid insulation or equivalent

Windows with an average U-factor of .35 or lower

If you checked ALL of these boxes this house is VERY LIKELY TO QUALIFY for the $2,000 tax credit. Keep taking the quiz because this house could be a SURE BET!

Again no promises about a particular house jumping through the tax credit testing hoops; but if you can check the boxes in step 3, your tax credit form has a very, very bright future.

Step 3:

All ducts are in conditioned spaces

HVAC Systems :

At least 92% AFUE efficient furnace (or equivalent boiler)
with at least R-38 attic insulation

OR ground source heat pump

OR in-floor heat with an efficient boiler

Insulation & Air Barriers :

R-10 foundation insulation

A really professional and competent insulation sub-contractor

A well-sealed, continuous air barrier

If you checked all or most of these boxes, get out your credit card and run - don't walk - to your phone. Even if you didn't check all of the boxes in step 3, your house is very liekly to earn a tax credit.

"The Home Energy Tax Credit is a great tax benefit for Minnesota builders. If a BAM builder qualifies 20 homes this year, they'll receive a dollar for dollar tax credit of $40,000 and can deduct the $19,900 EPI testing fee as a direct business expense. If the builder's tax liability is too low to use the entire credit this year, the surplus credit can be carried forward up to 20 years."
