Builders Successful in Creating
a Stronger Building Code

4/13/2007—Minnesota is one of the more advanced states when it comes to protecting our homeowners through a strong building and energy code. The code provides a minimum set of standards that builders must follow to ensure our homes are safe and durable. But there is always room for improvement.

After 2 years of advisory committee meetings and a significant amount of work on making recommendations for code changes, the Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM) was delighted to read the Administrative Law Judge’s report that supported the industry’s recommendations for change. The new code changes are schedule to take effect May 31, 2007.

“Trying to address a Minnesota specific issue and hold builders to a higher standard of building to protect the consumer is the right thing to do,” says Pam Perri Weaver, Executive Vice President of the Builders Association of Minnesota.

Among BAM’s proposals was a simple provision to require pan-flashing in the code. Pan-flashing is a way to move incidental moisture away from window and door openings and keep wall assemblies dry. This method has been used for years by a large number of BAM members. Pan-flashing is a cost-effective way to eliminate moisture intrusion problems, keeping our homes durable, safe and affordable.

“We believe that the code changes that have come forward, particularly related to pan flashing, will increase the durability of homes,” said Jeff Schoenwetter, President JMS Homes.  “The process took a lot of work but it was worth it and the homes our members build will be stronger and more durable as a result.”

BAM would like to remind consumers that all builders must be licensed and build to the code. Purchasing a new home or remodeling your existing home is a large investment in time, dollars and emotion. Buyers should be sure to protect themselves by researching the builder they intend to hire. Consumer tips are available at www.bamn.org.
